Born a shameful bastard to a wealthy family in the Gahnawende Rim to the south, his father threw him into a river as an infant in an attempt to drown him... But he survived, and was discovered by an elderly witch out gathering herbs for her wares. She brought him home and raised him as her own, giving him the name he goes by and teaching him the basics of dark magic. This wasn't to last, either. When he was barely a teenager, a group of bandits raided the witch's hut looking for a rumored treasure she kept. When they didn't find it, they killed her and cut Vahn's throat, leaving the bodies to burn in the wreckage of the hut. He survived. Taking old witch Brannon's staff and rosaries, Vahn systematically hunted down each man involved in the raid. He was shot with arrows. He was cut with swords, struck many blows by axes and pierced with spears. He was pummeled with fists when all else failed. Bruised, battered, bloody, and beaten, Vahn survived. The raiders he tracked down one by one did not, save the last. That one was spared to spread the word. Death was coming. By the time he was twenty five Vahn Brannon was a feared name, both on the battlefield and among the bandits. He was known across the continent as a man who just would not die, no matter what was done to him. He was famed as a bounty hunter who always caught up to his target. It was whispered that he was a zealot of dark gods who granted their favor for whoever would pay him. He was rumored to be a generous soul who would give away his last penny to the poor and helpless. Legend had it that he was a warlock who stuck only to the shadows and detested daylight, and could tell your fortune from reading your palms. It was said he could see the future in smoke and fire. It was known that he carried a rosary with three bells on it, and the bells only rang when he finished his prey. Perhaps some of these stories were true. Perhaps all, or perhaps none of them were. And perhaps Vahn's reticence on the matter over the years was meant only to encourage the stories. For what is a mercenary without a reputation?
